Concurs de Castells for American Travel Mag Afar

If you can get your hands on Afar magazine keep your eyes out my picture of the Castells taken during the Concurs de Castells in Tarragona. This is an amazing event where teams from all around Catalonia gather in the old bull ring to build human towers. Teams are awarded marks for technicality and the height of the towers. One of the main things that struck me about this sport was the comradery that was shown between the teams. All the teams banded together in order to help each other out when the came to building the more technical castells or the higher ones.

Surfing Deadmans and Wild Weather

Surfing Deadmans and Wild Weather

Wild weather has lashed the Sydney coastline these last couple of days. Winds up to 130km/hr have whipped up a huge swell which is throwing itself onto the coast causing damage up and down. Only a brave few have taken themselves out into the water to chase the waves. I spent the day shooting around near Deadmans on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Although the waves were some what infrequent they were big, solid and impressive when they did roll in.

Surfing, Dee Why Point

Surfing, Dee Why Point

It’s been a great couple of months for sizeable swells coming to the beaches of Sydney. Again the swell has picked up. Peaking around 10ft yesterday afternoon. This morning I swung by Dee why point for a bit of a look. I have always had trouble shooting at the Point. It’s a spot where a really long lens is needed so you can shoot from further up the beach or of course an underwater housing and to get out there amongst it. If I keep shooting surf shots I am definitely going to have to think about this.

Surfing Narrabeen

Surfing Narrabeen

The swell came in again to Narrabeen Beach on Sydney’s Northern beaches. Big, hollow waves brought out surfers out again. These shots were taken on Tuesday morning so although there was a few people out the working day kept the crowds away.

Downhill, Oxford Falls

Downhill, Oxford Falls

I went for a bit of a shoot at Oxford Falls on Sydney’s Northern Beaches today. It’s quite a tricky place to shoot at due to the mixed lighting conditions, strong sunlight filtering through the trees makes everything heavily contrasted. If you are lucky though you can find spots where the sunlight will work well to light the rider. A little bit of flash to separate the rider from the background and these are the results.
A big thanks to Josh from walking up and down for me all day.

North Curl Curl Rock Pool

North Curl Curl Rock Pool

A spontaneous visit to North Curl Curl rock pool a couple of nights ago resulted in some surprise catches. The few clouds that were in the sky lit up beautifully and went through the full range of sunset colours.
I have also been playing around with a few new toys lately. These photos use a variable neutral density filter to slow down the length of exposure time. I’ll write a little bit more about them all soon. Until then….Enjoy!!!
