Turimetta Beach, Sydney, Australia

Turimetta Beach, Sydney, Australia

I recently visited the beautiful beach of Turimetta on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It is not a beach that I had been to for a while but I think that I shall be heading there again very soon.

Turimetta beach lies between North Narrabeen beach and Warriewood beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It is a beautiful little beach only a few hundred metres long. At the northern end a collection of boulders, fallen from the cliffs above, lay strewn about half in the water. I used to go surfing here quite a lot as a kid but hadn’t been here for some time now.

At the southern end of the beach lies a rock shelf which I intend to photograph on my next visit.  I think this will have to be a  sunrise shot which might make things a bit tougher knowing me and how much I love getting up that early.

Lighting Course

Lighting Course

The lighting course is over. I had a fantastic time and I learnt a huge amount. The majority of the course was focused upon studio lighting, how to set it all up and how to shoot with it. I had never done anything in this area before and it felt like a big hole in my knowledge. Over the course, I learnt about different lighting modifiers such as snoots, grids, softboxes and barn doors. Also how to enhance the shadows, restrict the light, create rim lights and bounce the light around as is needed. Continue reading →

Mountain Biking and Flashing

Mountain Biking and Flashing

With studying lighting at school I thought I should take my new found knowledge into the field. A friend, John Harbord, has been kind enough to volunteer his skills on a mountainbike. We took the show up to Oxford Falls in Sydney’s Northern Beaches area. Also met up with another friend, Josh a BMXer, at the nearby Freedom Jumps. The following is a few of the shots.

Chris Cab: Skateboard

Chris Cab: Skateboard

Chris Cab is a character with a lot of personality. His open and easy going attitude reflects in his skate style. With his hometown boasting one of the best skateparks in Europe, The Cradle, his roots are dug firmly into old school, skating mainly bowls and vert. Now things are moving for him in a slightly different direction with the release of a his own designed skateboard and the beginnings of his new company, Wasted Youth Skateboards.

Chris Cab

Other sports do you participate in?

What are “Sports”?

How did you get involved in skateboarding?

Skateboarding got hold of me, when I was around 10… 😉

What motivates you to skate:

The inner drive, the hunger to skate every day, feel the pain, dedication and passion. Those are the things that motivate me…

Who or what are your influences:

Dogs, Wife, Parents, Wasted Youth Crew, Thrasher, too many to name…

You have just released your own skateboard. How did this come about?

I was tired of begging for boards at Black Label, so I asked my homie Adi from the XDouble Shop in Innsbruck, if he was down to do a shop model with my shape and my design ideas… He was down and they sell very well… I am stoked for I am riding exactly what I want!

Austria is better known for its skiers and snowboarders. What is it like for skating?

We have the 1st cradle in the World, one of the best parks in Europe if not the best! Since Dreamland poured  ‘crete in Tirol, there have been bowls and pools popping out left and right in Austria. So I think it is pretty cool if you down with transitions. Street skate wise, I have no clue, gotta ask someone else.

Favourite trick at the moment:

Favourite trick, must be the invert but all time it will be the frontside rock….

Best Moment:

You gotta be kiddin’ me… Waaaaaay too many to count!!! But surely every time I learn a new trick or ride out something big… 😉

Worst Moment:

Same, same but different. But again, surely every time I get hurt badly…

Plans for the future:

Get my skateboard sales from my company ”Wasted Youth” up and running so I can travel again, but real plans…… none. Taking it day by day. The only thing I know, is that my wife and I will be moving into a little farmhouse by the woods, where I can finally build my own concrete wonderland and live a happy life…

Last Words or anything you would like to add:

Rollerblading sucks, Skateboarding is everything, Viva lá WASTED YOUTH!!!

Fes el Bali, June 2010

Fes el Bali, June 2010

Fes el Bali

This month’s calendar image is Morocco’s Imperial city of Fez, or more specifically Fes el Bali, the old walled medina of Fez. The shot was taken from the Merenid Tombs overlooking the old medina. Fez is one of my favourite cities for losing myself in. It is one of those cities where around every corner there seems to be something new to explore.

The medieval capital of Morocco and a great city of high Islamic civilization Fez is Morocco’s third largest city. It is one of the country’s four “imperial cities,” the others being Rabat, Marrakech and Meknes. The sprawling maze of Fes el Bali  is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has the honour of being the best-preserved old city in the Arab world. No cars or trucks can enter the narrow streets and transports of goods through the Medina is provided by donkeys, carriages, and motorbikes.

The city, founded on the banks of the Fez River by Idris I in 789, was populated by Muslims, Moriscos (Moors of Spanish or Portuguese descent) and Jews. It was a scientific and religious center where both Muslims and Christians from Europe came to study. The University of Al-Karaouine, founded in AD 859, is the oldest continuously functioning university in the world.

Fez was a major trading post of the Barbary Coast of North Africa and was at the end of a north-south gold trading route from Timbuktu in Mali. It was a prime manufacturing location for leather goods and its tanneries are today still use techniques used in the middle ages.

Rainy days in Austria

Rainy days in Austria

Through the Forest

What a wet time in Austria, 4 weeks of rain and when it wasn’t raining, snow. I think in total I had 2 days of clear skies. The heavy cloud cover really limited the amount of landscape photography that was possible but I took the opportunity to shoot some black and white, something I usually shy away from. When the clouds lifted slightly they started to tease me with glimpses of the mountain tops. I took a few chances in the breaks between the rain and set off on short walks. More often these walks took me into the forests as these heavy overcast days leave a nicely balanced light throughout without the harsh contrast that dapples the forest on sunny days.

I spent a few days around Brixlegg, a village about 300kms from St. Anton heading towards Vienna. My main reason for this was the excellent skate park called The Cradle. I shall write a post later with more shots and information regarding this.
